Fabric Glossary for Beginners Vol 2

Since our first volume of the Fabric Glossary for Beginners was so well received, we’re excited to bring you a second edition, enriched with even more essential terms to explore and understand better. Whether you are new to the world of liturgical textiles or simply looking to deepen your understanding, “Fabric Glossary for Beginners Vol 2” is designed to make the world of textiles more accessible and approachable. We hope it continues to simplify the language of textiles and inspire your projects alike.

BROCADE

Brocade is a richly textured fabric that features woven-in patterns, often with metallic threads like gold or silver. The design is part of the fabric itself, creating a luxurious and ornate look. This fabric is used for formal and ceremonial items in liturgical settings.

DAMASK

Damask is a reversible, patterned fabric that is often made from silk or cotton. It’s characterized by intricate woven designs, typically featuring floral or geometric patterns. The design is created through the weave itself, rather than printing or embroidery. This fabric is commonly used in liturgical settings for altar cloths, banners, and vestments.

LUREX

Lurex is a brand name for metallic yarns that are often woven into fabrics to give them a sparkling, reflective effect. It is commonly used in liturgical textiles for creating designs with a glittering effect, particularly for ceremonial garments. Lurex fabrics can be made completely with lurex threads or used as a design.

METALLIC

Metallic fabrics contain a significant amount of metallic threads, usually gold or silver. They add a rich, reflective quality to the textile, making them ideal for designs that need to shine. Metallic fabrics are often used for high-ceremony items and accents in liturgical embroidery.

SEMI-METALLIC

Semi-metallic fabrics contain a lower percentage of metallic elements in their yarns, giving the fabric a subtle sheen without being fully metallic. These fabrics can have a soft shimmer, ideal for liturgical textiles that need a touch of elegance without overwhelming the design.

Keep in mind that most of the time, these terms are combined. A brocade can be semi-metallic or damask style, a lurex option can be fully metallic or semi-metallic, etc.
